I know what you're thinking, but shift gears a minute.
Imagine you're on the side of a mountain. A figure appears before you standing in a bush that is on fire, but the bush is not burning to a crisp. It is still perfectly in tact as is the figure. Then you hear a booming voice call your name specifically. You see nothing other than that burning bush, but you respond, "Here I am". That same voice says, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground".
In Exodus 3, Moses is given a specific charge while standing on the mountain of God called Horeb. Horeb, another name for Mt. Sinai, means "desolate place". This desolate place, because of God's presence, is then made holy.
There will be times in our lives when we feel like we are in a desolate place - deserted, bleak, dismal, bare or empty. Other times we may feel overwhelmed and consumed. Here's the thing, God has already promised and proven that the things that "appear" to overwhelm us or consume us, cannot really harm us. (Remember, even the three Hebrew boys trusted God in the fiery furnace).
Moses took off his sandals physically to get into a holy place. What are we willing to take off (or remove from our lives) to get to the same spiritual place, to get into the presence of God, to hear God's voice, and to walk on holy ground?
